Filmmaker Karan Johar recently shared his perspective on the role of logic in cinema, citing SS Rajamouli’s films as examples of storytelling built on belief rather than realism. In an interview with YouTube host Komal Nahta, Johar highlighted that logic is secondary to conviction in filmmaking.
During the discussion, Johar stated that many of the biggest hits in Indian cinema have succeeded not because of logical narratives but due to the filmmakers’ strong belief in their stories. He pointed to Rajamouli’s films, such as Baahubali and RRR, as prime examples. “If the filmmaker believes in the world they are creating, the audience will follow. That is the key to success,” he said.
Johar argued that storytelling in cinema is about creating a world that the audience can invest in emotionally rather than adhering to strict logic. “If a character can take on an army single-handedly, it’s not about realism—it’s about conviction,” he noted, adding that Rajamouli has mastered this approach.
SS Rajamouli’s films have significantly impacted Indian cinema’s global reach. Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali: The Conclusion set box office records, while RRR earned international recognition, including an Academy Award for Best Original Song. His ability to craft visually spectacular narratives with high emotional stakes has resonated with audiences worldwide.
Johar, who previously collaborated with Rajamouli to distribute Baahubali in Hindi, acknowledged the Telugu director’s unique style. “There’s no strict logic in these films, but they work because they make you believe,” he said.
Johar expanded on his point by referencing other successful films that prioritize storytelling over logical constraints. He cited recent blockbusters like Animal, Gadar 2, and RRR, arguing that their success stems from the emotional connection they forge with audiences.
“If you overanalyze and seek logic in cinema, you might lose the essence of storytelling. Films thrive on emotion, conviction, and belief,” he added.
Johar is currently producing Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, directed by Shashank Khaitan and featuring Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra, and Rohit Saraf. The film is set for release on April 18. Additionally, Johar is backing Tu Meri Mein Tera with Kartik Aaryan and Kesari Chapter 2, starring Akshay Kumar and R. Madhavan.
Rajamouli, meanwhile, is preparing for his next directorial venture, which is expected to be a globe-spanning action drama featuring Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu.
